Extracts from “reTURN: Strategie Spaziali di Ritorno per i Rifugiati Palestinesi”
by Maria Rocco
The word ‘Return’ has the dual meaning of ‘coming back’, which speaks here of the right of Palestinians to come back to what they consider their home-land, and ‘changing again’, which here refers to the re-narration of the character of this land, aiming to implement this right, while also responding to the transformation of the territory over the past 60 years.
reTURN is a proposal for the scenarios of potential futures. It starts from a present of destruction and obliteration and imagines the spatial transformations necessary to effect a return, even if ephemeral.
Following the precedent of practices of return already taking place among Palestinians, this project elaborates ‘minimal’ strategies of manipulation of the existing spatial condition to reorientate the functional logic of the space and set it free for public use.
